Big Cats of Serenity Springs

I have a friend who volunteers at Big Cats of Serenity Springs who wrote me that as much as she loves volunteering there, she has some concerns as to how things there are run and I'd like to know what your thoughts are.

These are her words to me...

The more I'm out there though the more saddened I become. While I know the owners have their heart in the right place, I know they also see cubs as something that attract in the public for private tours and photo ops, etc. and it drives me nuts.

(*They're getting most of their cubs from a guy in Oklahoma that breeds tigers for circus companies...for exploitation, and he profits from the sanctuary by them taking them off his hands-he otherwise has to "dispose" of them once they reach a few weeks if they aren't the right color for what he needs, so they've been known to drown the kits, shoot em, dump them, bury them alive...-It's more than I can bear..I don't have a mean bone in my body until it comes down to those types of people...)

...So this idiot benefits because they are "taking them off his hands" and the sanctuary benefits from the money that they profit off of by the tours and pics, which to me, feels like exploitation as well, because I feel as though there's so little education on conservation added into the tours we give...The cats get big, grow old and live their lives there, and they have so little enrichment...or any kind of a habitat that gives them room to be who they are..-I go so back and forth on my involvement there...The owner let his house foreclose last year to keep the sanctuary, but I just sometimes feel like something there isn't honesty, so pray for me!

First of all, I don't understand why it is legal to breed endangered species and sell them to one another in the United States and I don't understand why we can't get laws passed prohibiting the ownership of endangered species.  I understand CITIES listings and that not all cats are endangered but certainly most are threatened and in any event, I know your organization shares my frustrations.  So then my question is, is it legal for this breeder in Oklahoma to destroy the cubs he breeds-the one's he determines after birth that there isn't a market for?  Is it ethical for Serenity Springs to continue to take in cubs to bring money into their sanctuary for the care of the other cats and the young ones now to be cared for for the rest of their lives instead of trying to change the very system that is enabling them to have cubs?  Of course I don't want them destroyed; none of them, but when every sanctuary and rescue is filled and he's still breeding, what then?  How do we change these laws or make it more difficult for people to breed and sell across state lines or however the laws need to be written to identify the loop holes?  Is there anything that you can do or do you have knowledge of this facility and find my friend's observations to be incorrect in some way?

As I've said, I am not an animal extremist or psycho activist who would rather them all dead than in the care of professional providers such as ourselves. I'm a concerned conservationist, biologist and animal care professional.

  • As a former volunter at the Big Cats of Serenity Springs, I know for a fact that the owner of the facility is only looking to line his pockets with cash.

While I was there, the animals were for the most part taken care of, but the time that was taken to USE these cats in "photo ops" was out of control and it sounds like nothing has changed.

Let your friend who is volunteering there now to get out while you can. The owner played on my heart for the love of these animails and swindled $30,000 out of me. DUMMY ME, I know, but now I know better and left the place with I was asked to provide an additional $5600 to the "facility", and was told that I had to pay in order to stay.

All I have to say is

"GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN AND DON'T LOOK BACK!"
