Social Service for Animal Welfare We have been investigating East Coast Exotic Animal Rescue for several years now. They were brought to our attention in 2004. This place (from our investigations and by people making complaints who have either visited, or from previous staff/volunteers) is no better then the place in Zanesville, OH. Animals are over bred, not properly fed, have inadequate enclosures. They have lost grants due to lack of following through with upgrading enclosures. Maybe the general public remembers how many years the “new primate house is being built?” To date, it is not finished, yet these monkeys have been allowed to breed, and breed some more. If you think that what happened in Ohio, won't happen here, think again! They have had animals escape in the past, due to poor fencing. This animal was 10 miles away until it had to be shot. Who suffers there? The animal of course! Numerous animals have DIED there due to lack of veterinary care. What they are TELLING the general public is that they are a rescue, but rescue's usually don't let animals starve to death, or continually breed, or continue to bring (and that includes BUYING) in more mouths to feed when they can't give the ones they have adequate care. Each time we've been there, the grounds are horrendous and junk ridden. Old cars, tools laying everywhere, chemicals left sitting out withing harms reach to the animals. Just because someone CALLS themselves a rescue, doesn't mean they are. We have had three different veterinarians state in writing, that since 2004 through 2011 "the animals at East Coast Exotic Animal Rescue only have visual health checks” (this means they are looked at, period, NOT checked thoroughly) They also stated that no proper vaccinations have been given. One of the veterinarians stated he had “falsified documents”. This facility gave a tour when two of our investigators were present. The young man leading the tour was walking around with a beer bottle while conducting this tour. The owners are becoming hoarders of junk AND animals. If this place is allowed to continue on like this, I assure you this will be the next “horrible incident” you hear about on the news. We have finished the seven year investigation and will protest and petition to have the animals receive proper care. SS4AW was going to wait until next year to allow them, YET AGAIN another chance to do the right thing, for the safety of the animals, proper nutrition and enclosures, as well as the safety of the public as it is open for visitation. Once the indecent in Ohio happened this past week, people from their fan page and visitors flooded our email with complaints and concerns. There is also a bear in awful conditions by its self surrounded with old cars ,chemicals etc .this place is a pseudo place ,walking animals on a leash is from a member of their fanpage,of on of the cats they own.
