LAS VEGAS -- Video of a lion attacking a trainer at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas has been posted on the YouTube website.
MGM Resorts International spokeswoman Yvette Monet on Tuesday confirmed the video was from the Sept. 1 incident, when a lion lunged at a trainer in full view of casino patrons. The video shows the trainer attempting to hold the lion down and a second trainer stepping in between the two. The lion is eventually pushed away, but continues to walk around the habitat as if in pursuit of the trainer.Monet had previously said the trainer, who received stitches in his leg, was not an MGM employee. The incident is being investigated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The agency also responded in 2003 to the Las Vegas’ most famous animal attack, when magician Roy Horn was mauled by a tiger during a performance at the Mirage resort.

Doc Antle Charged in Tiger Escape

August 29, 2010 Miami, FL: Visitors to Miami's Jungle Island stampeded over each other to avoid an escaped, 3 yr old, 500 lb. tiger named Mahesh. A monkey escaped while being transported through the zoo and 500 lb. Mahesh bounded over the 14-foot fence into the public area according to the Miami Herald. The attraction's three big cats -- which include a liger and a white tiger -- have been confined to a "night kennel," while the park investigates. "We were really scared. There were people crying,'' Miami mom Dorothy Evans told the Herald, adding that people knocked each other down as they sprinted toward the shelter. "People were running for their lives," Larry Rhodes, 46, of Pompano Beach, told the Sun Sentinel. Miami Fire Rescue Lt. Ignatius Carroll told the Herald that several people were injured while running, including a mother who fell on top of her 15-month old baby. Another guest was taken to a Miami hospital after suffering a panic attack. Bhagavan (Kevin) Antle, who also owns T.I.G.E.R.S. in Myrtle Beach, SC and who is the owner of Mahesh, was charged with one count of maintaining captive wildlife in an unsafe condition, resulting in threats to public safety. Park owner Bern M. Levine was charged with two second-degree misdemeanors for conditions resulting in the animals' escape. The charges for both men have a maximum penalty of $500, FWC officer Pino said. Video

Uproar over abused tiger claimSat, May 22, 2010The Star/Asia News NetworkMALACCA - A 500ha resort in Alor Gajah, with its own safari, has attracted the attention of animal lovers and authorities here over a video clip on the Internet allegedly showing the abuse of a drugged tiger during a photography session. The two-minute clip first appeared on YouTube in February with the title "Tiger Being Abused For Money." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5ACVn73YL0It shows what seems to be a heavily sedated tiger on a raised platform and occasionally being propped up by its handler. The recording also includes an audio recording of an unknown person questioning, in Cantonese, the alleged mistreatment of the tiger. The person also mentions that she was told that patrons had to fork out RM15 to pose for photographs with the tiger. When contacted, Malacca Society Against the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) president Vincent Low said he was not shocked by such allegations as they had received complaints about the resort previously."It is a wild animal and should not be subjected to such treatment. Not only is it inhumane to treat the tiger in such a manner, it is also dangerous for patrons," he said.A Famosa Resort general manager Allan Chee denied the abuse allegation."There is no evidence that the tiger was drugged or abused by its handler," he said, adding that he was aware of the video clip and had received numerous inquiries from the public.Chee said the animal was a captive-bred tiger and was considered very tame and comfortable around humans."Tigers are nocturnal and those here are very well fed and become very lazy and lethargic during the mid-morning. So, it is natural that the handlers had to use extra coaxing to move the heavy tiger into position," he said.He also denied the resort charged RM15 for patrons to take photographs with the tiger."We only charge patrons if they ask us to photograph them with our instant camera," he said.A check revealed the resort had removed all negative comments from its Facebook fan page.It is learnt that WWF Malaysia had also received numerous complaints over the video and had advised those concerned to take it up with the Wildlife and National Parks Department. It is learnt that SPCA had submitted its recommendation to the department to ensure that animals at the resort were not abused.http://news.asiaone.com/News/AsiaOne%2BNews/Malaysia/Story/A1Story20100522-217788.htmlhttp://www.bigcatrescue.org

Looking out of the back window and seeing a full-grown wild cat roaming around is probably enough to get anybody's nerves going.
This was a reality for some neighbors near Torrey Pines and Elkhorn on Thursday night, after a pet tiger got loose!
The tiger's owner says he was walking his cat around on a leash, when the cat bolted.
"I didn't know he was gunna start to chase the rabbits. It's a suprise how fast he went after the rabbits," said Tony Fercos.
It what seemed like a split second, Fercos explains how quickly he lost sight of his tiger.
The white-colored bengal tiger is one of seven exotic cats owned by Fercos. All of the cats are part of his international magic act.
He says he was giving this particular tiger, named Picasso, special attention because he's recovering from an operation. According to Fercos, he wouldn't normally be walking his cats around out in front in the dark. He learned what a mistake that was.
"I promise not to go any more in the front yard. Just by the perimeter fence, that's it," he said.
After a frantic search around the neighborhood, Fercos spotted his tiger about five houses down.
By that point, police were already en route.
"I was worried in case a police car gunna come and shoot him. You know that was my biggest worry."
Fercos has been in the 'show business' for most of his life and says he has owned exotic cats since the mid 70's.
He considers all of his wild cats as his "children" and doesn't believe they would ever go after a human.
"He's not some kind of wild animal, oh my god, he's gunna kill everybody. He's a calm tiger."
Even though this tiger didn't harm anybody, animal control is investigating. Since it's an "open case" they are not commenting about it right now.
On a lighter note, Tony Fercos and his four tigers, one lion and two leopards are set to tour South America in September.
He says he hopes they can somebody perform at his home in Las Vegas.

Horrific Details Emerge in Chimp Attack

By JOHN CHRISTOFFERSEN

STAMFORD, Conn. (Feb. 18) -- Travis the chimpanzee, a veteran of TV commercials, was the constant companion of a lonely Connecticut widow who fed him steak, lobster and ice cream. He could eat at the table, drink wine from a stemmed glass, use the toilet, and dress and bathe himself.
He brushed his teeth with a Water Pik, logged on to a computer to look at photos and channel-surfed television with the remote control.

But on Monday, the wild animal in him came out with a vengeance.

The 200-pound animal viciously mauled a friend of his owner before being shot to death by police.

Investigators are trying to figure out why — whether it was a bout of Lyme disease, a reaction to drugs, or a case of instinct taking over.

"It's hard to say what exactly precipitated this behavior," said Colleen McCann, a primatologist at the Bronx Zoo. "At the end of the day, they are not human and you can't always predict their behavior and how they or any other wild animal will respond when they feel threatened."

Travis attacked 55-year-old Charla Nash as Sandra Herold frantically stabbed her beloved pet with a butcher knife and pounded him with a shovel. Nash was in critical condition Tuesday with "life-changing, if not life-threatening," injuries to her face and hands, Mayor Dannel Malloy said.

Police said they are looking into the possibility of criminal charges. A pet owner can be held criminally responsible if he or she knew or should have known that an animal was a danger to others.

In recordings of calls to 911 dispatchers released Tuesday, Travis' grunts can be heard as a frantic Herold cries that her pet is "eating" Nash and must be killed. The attack lasted about 12 minutes.
"The chimp killed my friend!" says a sobbing Herold, who was hiding in her vehicle. "Send the police with a gun. With a gun!"

The dispatcher later asks, "Who's killing your friend?"

"My chimpanzee!" she cries. "He ripped her apart! Shoot him, shoot him!"

After police arrive, one officer radios back: "There's a man down. He doesn't look good," he says, referring to Nash. "We've got to get this guy out of here. He's got no face."

Herold told New York-based WNYW-TV in an interview that aired Tuesday night that she has agonized over Nash's injuries and that Travis' death is "something that I can't hardly live with because he went in his room and died, and I wasn't with him. I couldn't get back in the house."

Police said that Travis was agitated earlier Monday and that Herold had given him the anti-anxiety drug Xanax in some tea. Police said the drug had not been prescribed for the 14-year-old chimp.

In humans, Xanax can cause memory loss, lack of coordination, reduced sex drive and other side effects. It can also lead to aggression in people who were unstable to begin with, said Dr. Emil Coccaro, chief of psychiatry at the University of Chicago Medical Center.

"Xanax could have made him worse," if human studies are any indication, Coccaro said.

Stephen Rene Tello, executive director of Primarily Primates, a sanctuary for chimps in Texas, said it is difficult to say what effect Xanax would have on a chimp, but he noted that chimps and humans have similar physiology.

Investigators said they were also told that Travis had Lyme disease, a tick-borne illness with flu-like symptoms that can lead to arthritis and meningitis in humans.

"Maybe from the medications he was out of sorts," Stamford police Capt. Richard Conklin said.

Herold could not be reached for comment. A woman answering the door at Herold's home, where drops of blood stained the walkway, would not speak to reporters Tuesday. Conklin said Herold was "traumatized by this very, very brutal attack."

Don Mecca, a family friend from Colchester, N.Y., said Herold, whose daughter died several years ago in a car accident, fed the chimp steak, lobster, ice cream and Italian food.

Herold built the chimpanzee a large cage in her home. She knew chimps could be dangerous but found it hard to part with Travis, Mecca said.

McCann of the Bronx Zoo said chimpanzees are unpredictable and dangerous even after living among humans for years.

"I don't know the effects of Lyme disease on chimpanzees, but I will say that it's deceiving to think that if any animal is, quote-unquote, well-behaved around humans that means there is no risk involved to humans for potential outbursts of behavior," she said. "They are unpredictable, and in instances like this you cannot control that behavior or prevent it from happening if it is in a private home."

Connecticut law requires anyone who owns a primate heavier than 50 pounds to obtain a state permit. But Herold was exempted from the law.

"Given that the family in Stamford owned Travis before this law was put on the books, and the fact that over the years the animal did not appear to present a public safety risk, their possession of the chimpanzee was allowed to continue," said Dennis Schain, spokesman for the state Department of Environmental Protection.
When he was younger, Travis starred in TV commercials for Old Navy and Coca-Cola, made an appearance on the "Maury Povich Show" and took part in a television pilot, according to a 2003 story in The Advocate newspaper of Stamford.

"He's been raised almost like a child by this family," Conklin said. "He rides in a car every day. He opens doors. He's a very unique animal in that aspect. We have no indication of what provoked this behavior at all."

Danger of big cats in wrong hands

10:52 PM CST on Wednesday, November 5, 2008

ST. LOUIS (KMOV) -- Twice this year at two separate locations in Missouri, workers almost lost their lives in tiger attacks.

The terrifying incidents prompted News 4 to examine the exotic animal trade business and the potential danger of having big cats in the wrong hands.

Camels, zebras, spider monkeys, ostriches, sloths, even a baboon are all for sale at Lolli Bros. livestock auction in central Missouri.

(KMOV.com Extra: News 4 Investigates: Exotic Animal Trade)

An undercover News 4 camera also recorded a rare white lion cub, born in a small family-owned West Virginia zoo. She'll be sold at auction to the highest bidder.

The auction, which is legal, will sell hundreds of exotic species, but there is growing concern that because of auctions and backyard breeders, the big cats are winding up with people who may not appreciate the danger.

Dick Stephens bought his tigers from a backyard breeder when they were cubs.

Now he keeps the full-grown tigers in an outdoor cage at his home just north of Springfield.

Stephens downplays the danger, but a tiger lunged at News 4’s Craig Cheatham when he got too close to the cage.

Three years ago, Ronda Good's 17-year old daughter Haley was supposed to be posing for a picture with a tiger cub at a Kansas sanctuary, but the cub wasn't available, so Haley stood next to a full grown tiger hooked to a chain.

Haley turned to run, and the tiger attacked.

Despite the obvious danger connected with owning big cats and other exotic animals, the Lolli Bros. auction has attracted a remarkable following.

During News 4’s visit, vehicles with license plates from thirty states and Mexico were seen in the parking lot.

Julie Leicht is the executive director of the Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation, a group trying to strengthen the state's exotic animal laws, which she believes are among the weakest in the country.

Leicht says dangerous exotic animals like tigers, lions and bears should be microchipped and registered so the state can easily track them.

She said the owners should have to pay registration fees, should not be allowed to let anyone touch the animals and should be required to get insurance.

Leicht said neighboring states of Illinois, Iowa and Kansas all have stronger laws than Missouri.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration admits it has no idea how many lions and tigers are in America, but several animal welfare groups believe there could be thousands of them.

For now the fate of some potentially deadly, sometimes unregulated animals are in the hands of people who may not recognize the danger.

Just days after a teenager is hospitalized from a possible tiger attack in Stone County, a local animal activist is now calling for tougher laws on where large exotic animals can be kept.

"Facilities like that need to have regulations,? says Lawanna Jones, ?and they need to know that those regulations are going to be checked on and enforced.?

Lawanna Jones is a private contractor with "Big Cat Rescue" and says the incident, where a 16-year old employee was supposedly attacked by three tigers at the Branson Interactive Zoo and Aquarium-- should never have happened.

She says this facility known as "Predator World" promotes itself as a zoo, but needs more regulations for standard procedures and safety protocol.

For example, Jones shot video at predator to o bserve the animals. She says the walls would shake and rattle when the tigers jumped at them and the animals were not even full grown at the time.

?If that had gave way the Plexiglas and the tiger would have been right out in the sidewalk on people, not just with people but on people,? says Jones. ?And what they had told me was prior to putting those cubs in there, the female tiger was in there."

Predator World didn't return our phone call to comment on this footage or the current condition of its facility.

We did reach state representative Bob Dixon who says he's concerned with employee and visitor safety in places like this.

A representative from Warren County is working to pass legislation that would add additional oversight and regulations to owning exotic animals.

Dixon says the legislation died the last two years but he?s looking to strengthen the bill and pass it through the General Assembly.

Animal Activist Calls for Tougher Tiger Laws

Reported by: Jeremy Stevens

Friday, Aug 8, 2008 @09:16pm CST

Canned Hunting Video

The Campaign Against Canned Hunting was founded by Chris Mercer and Beverley Pervan. After years of campaigning using their own savings, they established a not-for-profit Section 21 company (NO.2006/036885/08), which is dedicated to getting all trophy hunting banned in South Africa.

Canned hunting is a repulsive process which involves the captive breeding of wildlife, typically in appalling conditions, solely for the purpose of hunting it within a fenced compound from which there is no escape; there are many documented eye witness accounts of such appalling situations as lions drugged and shot within tiny holding cages, rhinos killed with multiple pistol rounds over the course of an entire day and the use of weapons such as crossbows, arrows, spears, knives and packs of hunting dogs to kill a variety of big game slowly and painfully.

The practice spawned in South Africa and has been exposed widely in the past by British and American journalists, however a beaurocratic smokescreen erupts with every exposure and the practice expanded, now occuring in other African and Asian nations and even in the developed world of the USA and Canada, today, even organisations such as WWF and the IUCN have begun to support trophy and canned hunting as a way of raising income, without stopping to ask how the money paid to hutning camps will ever find it's way into conservation programs.

Based in South Africa, we focus on addressing the problem here, but we also speak on, advise and support the issues raised everywhere we can; Chris regularly travels all over the world giving talks to the public, wildlife parks and organisations and delivering expert opinion directly to leaders of nations.

We believe that African wildlife is South Africa's greatest national asset. The protection of our future cannot be left unchecked to an often self-serving, morally depraved conservation bureaucracy. Nor can the exploitation of our national heritage be permitted to continue with such shocking cruelty that ordinary decent people in the first world recoil in horror, and respond by boycotting South Africa's goods and services.

The stakes are high: the hunting fraternity and its "nature conservation" accomplices are, in effect, seeking to hold the nation to ransom. Compassionate South Africans are invited to stand together to fight this dreadful conspiracy, and bring the cruelty to an end.

As in Kenya, all trophy hunting must be banned. The export of wildife bodyparts (trophies) must be prohibited. This fragmented, incompetent nature conservation regime must be dismantled and replaced by a more competent, streamlined service which is dedicated to protecting, not exploiting, our wildlife heritage.

Lion Re-Union Debunked

From: Big Cat Rescue's website:

We never ceased to be amazed at how quickly a stupid idea is spread around. If you have had Internet access for more than a week, you have probably had someone send you a link to a 1971 video clip of two guys hugging a lion that they raised as a pet and then sent to Africa when they couldn't play with him anymore. The people passing this around obviously know nothing about big cats, or they could see that in the re-union featured below, the male is still a kitten (hardly any mane) so despite his large size, his brain is still that of a dependent cub. Most of the big cats you see in circus acts, road side petting booths and night club acts are under the age of five because they look big to the public, but have not fully developed mentally.

Passing this video around is a bad idea for a number of reasons. It perpetuates the nonsense that people can have a bond with the king of beasts, just like with their dog. It encourages people to buy these magnificent animals or buy the right to touch one, which only fuels the trade. As long as people will pay, there will be people who will breed more big cats to live miserable lives of confinement and deprivation. If someone sends the video clip to you, please send them to this page so that we can stop the viral marketing of a campaign that is designed only to cause suffering and pain.

The following is what is known of the story behind the clip.

The British documentary ?Christian the Lion? is a fascinating example of life imitating art. In this case, the art was the 1966 film classic ?Born Free? starring Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna. That film was based on the real-life story of George and Joy Adamson and their successful efforts to re-introduce an orphaned lion into the wilderness. (What most people do not know is that Elsa didn't live long on her own due to the fact that is impossible for a person to teach a big cat everything they need to know to survive without the cat coming to not have a healthy fear of going near people.)

?Christian the Lion? found Travers and McKenna in an advanced case of déjà vu. In 1970, they were shopping for a desk and ventured into the World?s End furniture store on the King?s Road in London. The store managers, the Australian duo John Rendall and Ace Berg, recognized Travers and decided to show him the store?s mascot: a young lion. Rendall and Berg had purchased the lion from the Harrod?s department store a year earlier and were raising him on their own. But, of course, a furniture store is no place to keep a lion ? and the combined salaries of two furniture store managers were barely keeping the animal fed.

Travers and McKenna, who had become highly visible as animal rights activists following the success of ?Born Free,? realized that the lion could not be kept as a domestic pet. And selling him to a zoo seemed like a cruel idea ? zoo design was still fairly primitive in the early 1970s and imprisoning a majestic lion in a stark cage was a ghastly notion. Thus, Travers and McKenna decided to reprise their ?Born Free? odyssey and called on George Adamson for an unlikely plan: to bring the London lion to Africa and teach him how to be a wild animal at home with nature. (Joy Adamson had separated from her husband in 1970 and, thus, was not a part of this venture.)

Travers and McKenna also decided to record this story as a documentary. The resulting ?Christian the Lion? actually gets off on a bit of a strange opening, with a clumsy recreation of the actors? initial discovery of Christian. For starters, the sound is badly out-of-sync ? watching the opening sequence is disconcerting, as it is easy to assume the production is an amateur outing. Even worse, the facts have been trimmed to the bone. Contrary to the film?s assertion, Christian?s presence was not a surprise to everyone ? the lion was actually something of a minor celebrity in London before Travers and McKenna showed up, and it was even featured in a fashion advertising campaign. Furthermore, the film ignores Rendall and Berg?s respective girlfriends, who helped in the care and maintenance of Christian. Rendall also wrote a book called ?A Lion Called Christian,? but that?s not cited here.

After that initial clumsy segment is over, ?Christian the Lion? finds its traction and is presented as a real-time, real-life adventure. Travers and McKenna invited Christian and his owners to live with them while arrangements are made to transport him to Africa. They took the lion on outings for a spot of exercise ? a romp in a closed-off church courtyard (with the vicar watching nervously from behind a curtained window) and a visit to the beach. The latter trip might have prompted the inclusion of the old British music hall ditty ?Oh, We Do Like to be Beside the Seaside,? but instead the film?s score is provided in hippy-dippy melodies by the English folk-rockers Pentangle.

Getting Christian to Kenya required a great deal of negotiations with the Kenyan government (obviously they had enough lions and weren?t eager to import one from England). Travers and McKenna, who alternate as narrators of the film, mention in passing that dealing with the Kenyan authorities took more time and energy than they expected. Nonetheless, they are able to get Christian transported to Kenya and into the care of George Adamson?s game reserve.

The remainder of the film follows Adamson?s efforts to integrate Christian into his new surroundings. That first involved introducing him to other lions ? up until this point, Christian lived exclusively with human company. Adamson tried to create a new pride of lions consisting of Christian and three other orphaned animals: the female Katania, the frisky tyke Super Cub, and a male lion named Boy who took an immediate dislike to Christian. However, once Boy and Christian determined the pecking order among them (Boy won the Alpha Male spot), the two became happy blokes.

Adamson?s next challenge was getting this new pride to take care of itself in the wild. The lions had to learn to hunt and to defend themselves from other lions that roamed Adamson?s preserve. Did Christian and his new family make it in the wild (if you can call the preserve, the wild)? If so, how long? Does anyone know?

There is a sequence late in the film that will soften even the most cynical of hard-hearts. The finds McKenna at a zoo in Amsterdam, where she has located Christian?s parents. The two lions are locked in a small, bare cage with a concrete floor. They pace endlessly and monotonously back and forth. It is tragic to behold these beautiful animals in such cruel captivity, and the viewer knows the beasts will never experience the chance for freedom that their offspring experienced.

Details on the production history for ?Christian the Lion? are somewhat difficult to track down. Some sources list the film as a 1971 production, others claim it was from 1976. One online source states the film was produced in conjunction with Rendall?s book, which came out in 1972, so that would probably put the film?s production closer to the earlier date. Also, a recent article in the Daily Mail outlines a 1974 reunion between Christian and his London buddies, but that meeting also included Christian?s lioness and cubs. There is no mention of this in the film, so I would assume the production wrapped in 1971 (it would seem peculiar to leave this post-script from the film). 1976 most likely reflects the year the film played in the U.S.

The film also has something of a problem with its name. The original British title was ?The Lion at World?s End,? a reference to the London neighborhood where Christian was raised. However, that reference had no meaning outside of the U.K., so the film was given a new title for its American release: ?The Lion Who Thought He Was People.? The film?s U.S. distributor, Scotia American, created a poster with Christian wearing big round eyeglasses ? making him look like the leonine equivalent of the cartoon canine Mr. Peabody. Of course, that title was even worse than the original, and the film was renamed ?Christian the Lion? for its U.S. and global distribution. In the U.K., it is now called ?Christian ? The Lion at World?s End.?

There are also a few sources that insist ?The Lion at World?s End? and ?Christian the Lion? are two different movies. That is not the case.

Scotia American went out of business in the mid-1970s and nobody seems to be claiming the film?s U.S. rights. Several distributors who specialize in public domain titles have been offering faded, muddy prints of ?Christian the Lion? on home video and DVD.

Limping Tiger in Zoo

This is OPEN LETTER to INSTITUTIONS, ORGANIZATIONS and MEDIA:

Hello,
This is another attempt to seek help for a representative of a species in danger!

There is a crippled tiger in Varna ZOO (in Varna, Bulgaria) and he's treated in very bad conditions.

His triangle cage is about 20 square meters big and it's made of a pure concrete - without absolutely no verdure. The floor is sully with his faecals and urine - and they put his food on top of that. The animal must tread it and you can feel a suffocate smell from his excrements. The tiger have something like a shelter in the wall but it looks too small and narrow.

We're writing to You because it's a terrible scene to see this majestic animal go in circles in this dirty and tiny cage. The conditions of all the animals there are very bad since 1990's and just recently the zoo made some changes -- the cages of the herbivorous animals are no longer iron but wooden.

We ask You either to somehow take away this tiger and relocate it in a better place - with space, vegetation, food and attention that he needs or at least for funding to improve it's surrounding area (although all the animals in this Zoo needs that more or less).

You can see photos of the tiger two years ago just when we started seeking for help and now in 2008 -- nothing changed but the old concrete floor is renewed!
(2006) http://nolimit.cult.bg/imagenation/se...
(2008) http://nolimit.cult.bg/imagenation/se...

Also two short online movies - how this tiger goes in circles in this awful cage:
(2006) http://www.vimeo.com/690520
(2008) http://www.vimeo.com/691101

During 2006 some organizations respond "we don't have any jurisdictions in your country because it's not a member of the European Union". However since 2007 Bulgaria is in EU so hopefully this should no longer be a problem. We need your help!

With hope this OPEN LETTER will find a positive response,

Also two short online movies - how this tiger goes in circles in this awful cage:

During 2006 some organizations respond "we don't have any jurisdictions in your country because it's not a member of the European Union". However since 2007 Bulgaria is in EU so hopefully this should no longer be a problem. We need your help!

With hope this OPEN LETTER will find a positive response,
