On July 15, 2010 we received a complaint that Tigers in Need in Oklahoma was allegedly charging the public to pay with 7 week old tiger cubs in direct violation of USDA's policy that only allows contact between the public and big cat cubs between the age of 8 weeks and 12 weeks. The USFWS deems that a real sanctuary does not breed, buy, sell, trade, nor allow public contact of any kind at any age with exotic cats. Any place that allows contact with their cats is not a real sanctuary.
Tigers in Need goes even further to harm big cats by fighting laws that are designed to protect wild animals from being exploited, abused and abandoned. What kind of rescue doesn't want the abuse to stop?

Ligers and Tigons
A liger is the result of breeding a male lion to a tigress.Since lions and tigers do NOT exist in the same areas,
this is NOT something that happens in the wild.It is ALWAYS done in captivity by irresponsible breeders
to produce a freak animal that people will pay to see. These cats suffer from many, many birth defects and almost always die young.Because liger cubs are much bigger than tiger cubs, it puts the mother tigress at great risk in carrying the young and she may require C-section deliveries. The tigress usually dies giving birth to a liger.Lion-tiger mating ONLY occurs in captivity, but it does NOT happen in the wild, probably for the same reason humans do not breedwith gorillas or chimps. Crossing the species line does NOT occur in the wild, because it would result in diminished fitness of the offspring. Geography is another obstacle to natural tiger-lion mating.Wild tigers mainly live in Asia, but the lion's natural habitat is almost entirely in Africa.
The Gir National Forest in India is the only place in the world where tiger and lion territories overlap, making people think that wild ligers roamed the area hundreds of years ago. This would be highly improbable, because the Gir forest is really very dry and not good tiger habitat. A tigon is the product of a male tiger and female lion and is not the same thing as a liger. Tigons receive growth inhibitor genes from both parents and so are smaller than either of them. They show much the same coloration of ligers except they sometimes have more prominent stripes. As with ligers, female tigons may be fertile whereas the males are sterile. Tigons have the same voices as liger, a sort of cross between tiger and lion. Tigons are now rarer than ligers, but in the late 1800's and early 1800s tigons were much more common. When the public stops paying to see these unfortunate creatures, the evil people (like "Doc" Antle) responsible for creating them will stop this inhumane practice. Please ask me for non- photoshopped liger photos and I will figure out a way to get them to you without giving away my email or other info.
KANCHANABURI, Thailand, February 3, 2010 (ENS) - Three advocates for wildlife conservation and welfare appeared in a Kanchanaburi court this morning to answer charges of defamation brought by the Tiger Temple, a tourist attraction in Kanchanaburi.
Edwin Wiek, founder and director of Wildlife Friends of Thailand, a wildlife rescue center near Hua Hin, has been charged along with two other conservationists over remarks in an April 2009 article published in the "Thai Post," a daily Thai-language newspaper. In the report, accusations were made concerning illegal possession of and trade in tigers at the temple, and abuse of the animals.

The other two defendants are Sawan Sangbunlang of the Thai Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Dr. Surapon Duangkae of the Wildlife Fund Thailand under Royal Patronage. This organization closed in July 2009 due to lack of funds.
If convicted, they could face jail sentences.
Hundreds of foreign tourists daily visit the Tiger Temple to see and take pictures with the tigers. It is a lucrative business. The entrance fee is 500 baht (US$15) per person while making "special photos" costs 1,000 baht (US$30) extra. For a morning experience, people pay 4,500 baht (US$120) per person to feed the cubs and watch the cub exercise session.
The Tiger Temple's success is based around claims that its tigers were rescued from poachers and live and move freely and peacefully amongst the temple's monks, who are actively engaged in conservation and rescue work.
However, undercover investigations by the British wildlife charity Care for the Wild International, conducted from 2005-2008, revealed evidence of tigers at the facility being regularly beaten with wooden sticks and clubs, being forced to sit in direct sunshine for hours, and being kept in poor conditions with inadequate food.
The CWI investigators observed that when tigers are not obedient before, during or after the photo-sessions they are sprayed by the keepers with urine from bottles in their eyes and faces and/or hit with wooden sticks on their backs and heads.
Tigers are reported to be extremely lethargic during photo sessions, leading to concerns they may be drugged.
A British tourist, visiting the Tiger Temple on a tourist day trip from Bangkok in December 2009 wrote in an unsigned letter posted on the website Tiger Temple Truths, "The tigers heads were picked up and dropped heavily into our laps for us to pose with, but the tiger I was with didn't make a sound or move a muscle, it's like he had no idea where he was, or what was happening to him. ... I don't believe a tiger can sleep so deeply without being sedated in some way."
This tourist also observed abuse of the animals. "The Tiger Temple Thai staff were on hand to keep the tigers away from us," she wrote. "They did this by banging the ground and shoving the tigers away with tools such as spades, pickaxes and long metal poles. One Thai temple staff member went to hit the ground in front of one of the tigers with his pickaxe, in order to keep him from coming too close to us, but the pickaxe hit the tiger in the paw instead, and the tiger made a small noise of pain and leapt away to lick his paw."
Care for the Wild International's 2008 report "Exploiting the Tiger" uncovered evidence of illegal trade and breeding of tigers at the facility. A copy of a contract was found in 2008 where the Tiger Temple agreed to send tigers to an illegal tiger farm in Laos, signed by the tiger farmer, the abbot of the temple and a member of the temple board.
The CWI report states, "Whilst the Tiger Temple claims it received its first tigers legitimately as animals rescued from poachers, CWI has obtained evidence that, rather than continuing as a rescue centre, the Temple now operates as a breeding facility and is involved in the clandestine exchange of tigers with the owner of a tiger farm in Laos. These actions contravene Thai, Laos and international law (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species in Wild Fauna and Flora - CITES)."
Breeding tigers in Thailand requires a government license under the Thai Wild Animals Reservation and Protection Act 1992. The temple does not have such a license but has, by its own records, bred at least 10 cubs from its original animals.
To be part of a conservation breeding program, the genetic make-up and history of an animal's parents must be known. But the original animals at the temple are of unknown origin, nor have they been DNA-tested to identify their sub-species, according to the CWI report. With this background, the temple cannot participate in any recognized conservation breeding program.
Wiek disputes the Tiger Temple's claims that it can release its tigers back into the wild, because he says the tigers in its care are hybrid animals resulting from the breeding of two different sub-species and have no conservation value.
"All tigers at the Tiger Temple are hybrid tigers that originated from a commercial tiger farm in Ratchburi province. The value to conservation of hybrid wildlife is zero," Wiek says. "They don't have any value for conservation because they don't boost the gene pool and they can't interbreed with wild tigers."
"The release of hybrid wildlife back to the wild is considered a biological crime by conservation experts worldwide," said Wiek in a posting February 2 to an email list about animals in Asia. "In the past years, several tigers from the tiger temple have mysteriously disappeared once mature, and some when there were excess cubs."
Care for the Wild International says, "There is consensus amongst conservationists that releasing captive-bred tigers is almost never a viable option because of shortage of natural habitat and, in the case of animals that are used to human proximity, such as the tigers at the temple, release is potentially fatal to tigers, humans and livestock."

Owner of escaped circus elephant facing more than 10 alleged USDA violations
By Kasey Fowler, Staff Writer
Published: November 06, 2009 11:26 pm
The owner of an escaped circus elephant that collided with an SUV Wednesday night faces more than 10 alleged violations outlined in a complaint filed by U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The complaint alleges Douglas Keith Terranova, of Kaufman, Texas, and others violated the Animal Welfare Act from 2005 through 2008 in several instances, including failure “to handle animals as carefully as possible in a manner that does not cause behavioral stress, physical harm, or unnecessary discomfort.”
In addition, the animal rights group In Defense of Animals, based in California, on Friday filed a complaint with USDA urging the agency’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) confiscate two elephants from Terranova, including Kamba, the elephant involved in Wednesday’s accident.
In her letter, Deborah Robinson, captive elephant specialist with In Defense of Animals, said the elephants are suffering because of Terranova’s handling.
“The elephants are in grave danger: they are clearly suffering from stress, which is known to have immunological consequences and to increase the risk of infectious disease,” Robinson said in her letter. “Further, they are at great risk of being killed or injured by a variety of dangers (automobiles, public safety officers, topography) every time they escape.”
Terranova did not return a phone message left Friday.
USDA spokesman David Sacks said all complaints are taken seriously and the agency will look into the situation.
“If it holds some weight, we’ll address that,” he said.
Among the violations alleged in the USDA complaint filed in July were:
• In June 2006 in Wisconsin, a rope dividing the camel and elephant enclosures was loose and a camel became entangled.
• In June 2007 in Maryland, a mountain lion’s enclosure was cleaned with a hose while the animal still was in it. The animal also was exposed to chemical detergents that could cause skin irritation or damage.
• In May 2008, an adult female tiger was pregnant with her first litter but was kept on the road with the circus. The tiger gave birth to three cubs and would not nurse the cubs and a veterinarian in Missouri provided kitten milk replacements and administered antibiotics. One cub died three days after birth, and a second cub died 10 days after birth.
• Between April and August 2008, Terranova did not trim or have trimmed the pads of an elephant’s feet. By August, the pads were overgrown, with uneven surfaces and flaps of tissue embedded with dirt, fecal matter and other material. The elephants also did not have adequate skin care, resulting in an accumulation of dead skin on their heads, backs and ears.
• In June 2008, two elephants at a circus in Kansas were spooked during a storm and walked through neighborhoods before they were recaptured.
• In August 2008, Terranova and others attempted to hide a tiger cub from APHIS inspectors. The tiger cub was in a small dog carrier in a trash-strewn transport truck, with insufficient ventilation and cooling. The interior temperature was measured at 89 degrees with 48 percent humidity. The tiger was in a harness that was too small, causing chafing. The tiger had insufficient food and water. It was thin, with a protruding backbone and hips. The tiger also was not treated for an abrasion on its face and a wound near its eye.
Kamba, the elephant in-jured in Wednesday’s accident, was taken to the veterinary school at Oklahoma State University after being looked at by Enid veterinarian Dr. Dwight Olson.
“She has been treated and released to her owner. She was treated for minor injuries and the USDA is investigating it,” said Alanna Bradley, communications specialist for OSU.
Bradley refused to release any more information on the injuries the elephant had.
According to Olson, Kamba suffered a broken left tusk, a leg injury and some scrapes.
The 4,500-pound elephant escaped from Family Fun Circus Wednesday night at the Garfield County Fairg-rounds and collided with an SUV driven by Bill Carpenter on U.S. 81. Neither Carpenter nor his wife, Deena, were injured.
Family Fun Circus issued a statement on its Web site Friday stating Kamba would not be returning to the circus for the rest of the season. The circus contracted with Terra-nova for the elephant’s services.

Controversial Christian zoo skinned tiger Tira and stored her head in freezer
By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 10:52 PM on 19th October 2009
A Christian zoo decapitated a dead tiger and cut off its paws before it dumped the carcass on farmland and stored the head in a freezer, an investigation has revealed.
The female Bengal tiger called Tira was skinned after she died of natural causes and then buried in a black bin bag at Noah's Ark Zoo Farm.
Investigators also discovered she was on loan from the owner of the Great British Circus - one of the last big top shows in Britain to use live tigers in performances.
Bosses at the zoo, in Wraxall near Bristol, admitted the skin, paws and head were removed to be hung on the wall as part of a display for 'secondary education'.
After the revelations, staff at Noah's Ark - which promotes creationism and denies the theory of evolution - dug up the remains and incinerated them.
The case emerged in an undercover investigation by campaign group the Captive Animals Protection Society (CAPS), which planted an undercover worker at the zoo.
The organisation also claims the zoo is raising young tigers as part of a breeding programme to hand back to the circus.
Campaign Director Craig Redmond today called for the attraction to be closed down.
He said: 'What we discovered was shocking but really only scratched at the surface of what goes on in zoos.
'We initially planned just to confirm that the zoo was a breeding centre for the circus owner but the fate of the tiger Tira, her mutilated body dumped in a hole, shows how these animals are treated as commodities, bred to attract tourists.
'We have reported the zoo to various authorities including the local council which licenses the zoo, calling for an investigation as well as its licence to be revoked.'
The undercover 'employee' spent two months working as a volunteer at the site from early June to mid August and secretly filmed conversations.
During that time, recorded conversations confirmed that staff were aware animals were received from Martin Lacey, who owns the Great British Circus.
But when asked, members of the public were told the animals were bought in from a 'private collection in the north' - which it emerged was Mr Lacey.
Three tigers arrived at the zoo in June and July, one of which was the heavily pregnant six-year-old Bengal tiger, Tira.
Three of her cubs were stillborn and the fourth was immediately removed and hand-reared but died three weeks later.
Tira died ten days after the birth and staff cut off her head and paws before her skin was removed and her body dumped on the farm's grounds.
Mr Redmond added: 'The body was buried for reasons unknown, but before any test or a post mortem could be carried out to ascertain the cause of death.
'The head was later seen by our undercover investigator wrapped in a black bag in a freezer, but the paws were never seen again.
'Our insider was told the skin would be hung on the wall as a decoration.'
Anthony Bush, the owner of Noah's Ark, said he has since dug the tiger up and corrected his mistake after Defra vowed to investigate.
A spokeswoman for the zoo said: 'Noah's Ark does not own or hold circus tigers and they are not the property of the Great British Circus.
'The Tigers at Noah's Ark Zoo Farm belong to Linctrek Ltd, a company providing trained animals for use in film, other collections and TV.
'A director of Linctrek is Martin Lacey, who also owns the Great British Circus. We have never, when questioned, withheld information regarding this.
'It has always been well known that our tigers and camels come from a private collector in the north of England.
'Tira the tiger died from a pre-existing condition which was found following a thorough and legal post mortem. Being a zoo and a farm we buried the Tiger under regulations covering farm land.
'However, on subsequently being informed of other regulations we acted instantly to remedy this situation.
'The tiger skin, head and feet will be used for secondary education here at the Zoo and is a common practice within the zoo community.
'The welfare of the animals is exceptional with Noah's Ark passing government and institutionally accredited inspections.'
However, the zoo denied claims that it is part of a breeding programme and says it had 'no immediate plans' to hand back Tira's cubs.
The British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums, Somerset Trading Standards and Defra have all vowed to investigate the allegations.
Professional group the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums said it would also investigate.

At some point - from someone - you will probably receive the email at the bottom of this message. Or, you may receive a clip of TV reporters swimming with tigers, or a chimp "raising" white tiger cubs, or even adorable photos of cross-species friends like an orangutan befriending a dog. These all come from the same organization – T.I.G.E.R.S. – and it's a marketing ploy they use to bring money and business from unsuspecting customers.
Please don't become an accomplice to animal abuse of the worst magnitude.
Whenever you receive an email concerning the organization
T.I.G.E.R.S. (Institute of Greatly Endangered Rare Species), based in Myrtle Beach and Florida,
DO NOT FORWARD IT
This can be one small way you can help save 100's of abused big cats.
Doc Antle, a/k/a Dr Bhagavan Antle, the proprietor of T.I.G.E.R.S., supposedly received his "credentials" in China. He has said that he needs a supply of 200 tiger cubs per year just to fulfill all of his global photo ops and animal encounters at fairs, malls, and other exhibits.
Please ask yourself, where do all these cubs end up once they are fully grown?
Doc Antle is a major supplier/consumer in the exotic animal trade. If you abhor puppy mills, you can only imagine the major abuse that takes place in the loosely regulated business of big cat exhibition. His breeding of an unnatural species, a liger (the mating of a lion and tiger), as a profit center is the ultimate statement of abuse, though. A liger is a manmade species that suffers tragically. To learn more about ligers, go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKYILLEdy5s The last line in the email says it all when they refer to Hercules, the liger, as "this thing."

TAYLOR — When Judi Vig, a member of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, saw exotic animals on display Wednesday at Southland Center, it sent alarms off in her mind.
She called City Hall to check that everything was in order with the display and to voice concerns about the animals’ welfare.
Vig said PETA has had issues with G.W. Exotic Animals of Wynnewood, Okla., which houses the animals Awakening Production uses.
Awakening Production came to Southland with lion and tiger cubs and a baby kangaroo.
It set up a display where people could see the animals, and if they wanted, pay $25 for two people to spend eight minutes in a cage with tiger cubs and a trainer.
Today is the show’s last day.
Awakening Production had not obtained a permit to hold a special event, which is required, said Joseph Nardone, the city’s executive director of development services.
A representative of the company came to City Hall with a letter from Southland Center giving permission for the event and to seek a permit, he said.
Ordinance and animal control officers investigated the complaint, he said.
Animal control officers found no violations, city officials said. The permit was issued.
As of Thursday afternoon, the company was in compliance with all city ordinances, Nardone said.
“Getting to touch a baby tiger is a moment in a lifetime,” said Michael Bussey, stage manager for Awakening Production.
“You’re seated. You go in with a certified trainer. The tigers will roam around the cage, crawl on your lap, and you can pet them.”
There were plenty of takers, from young children to a 93-year-old woman, he said. But mainly, it was young families, especially mothers with their children.
Awakening Production also put on a free magic show each day. The purpose behind the magic show is to educate the public about ownership of exotic animals, Bussey said.
It booked several visits with General Growth Properties, which owns Southland Center and other malls across the country, Bussey said.
Awakening Production came with a 4-month-old white tiger; two 8-week-old tigers, which went into the play cages with visitors; a 13-week-old tiger; two 3-week-old lions; and a 3-month-old kangaroo, said Vicky Welch, road manager and animal caretaker.
Fourteen people, including stage crew and animal caretakers, travel with the animals, Welch said.
Comments:
all you sorry people that have no clear understanding related to animal rights....The show at Southland was for self gain......Do you all know HOW MUCH MONEY THEY MADE! At the expense of breeding tigers that they can take around the country...to make money off you fools then they give or sell those tigers when they are too big...they end up in China and so on for their herbal cures....you people need to wake up, your just as guilty as they are....don't tell this woman to wake up she is very much awake...which is more then what I can say to you sorry people that can't engage your children into more productive activity to protect the environment and rights of animals.....you all get off easy putting your kid in a cage with an abused animal and you think your TEACHING or putting a star on your forehead for being a good parent....do your homework first!!!! Also, PETA along with other animal groups are all around...what do you think your local animal shelters, PAWS, etc.....what do you think they do...Also, The circus animals are also in a mess of abuse....pay attention and get involved...Don't attend GIB. Trade Center Circus......I wonder how many of you people that gave your hard earned money or welfare check money to this group just ignored putting a good meal on your table for your kids....Oh I know I forgot people like you get off easy.....processed food for the kids...right...$1.00 burgers at mcdonalds....PS.....I'm proud of my kids they wanted NO part of this! " go michigan
" I'm not a member of PETA but would NEVER EVER put my kids in a cage with a wild animal.....I don't ever want them to think that it is cute or FAIR to the animal, they do not need to be in cages they need to be in their natural environment.....free....not caged! City of Taylor and Southland should be ashamed for allowing this! I'm HAPPY this girl made the phone call....we need more people like her... " non member of PeTA
" while everyone who paid money to sit with an exotic animal and said it was a great family moment talk about wake up and smell the real world if u thought that was so great an experience WHAT ABOUT THE ANIMALS where are their parents? how about the family experience for the wild animals? For areal family experience try the park, playing catch with ur kids when are parents going to get it MEMORIES CANNOT BE BOUGHT THEY MUST BE EXPERIENCED!!Thankfully this woman knew that and tried to point that out, good for her THANK YOU!!! " wendy
" I was at the mall today doing some shopping with my son. We didn't even know about the 'show' until we were walking through the mall.
We wandered over and looked into one of the cages. There was a man sitting on the floor, holding his toddler daughter. The little girl was terrified of the baby tiger. She was screaming and kicking at the tiger. I think she made contact at one point. The employee never suggested the child be taken out of the cage, nor did the father have enough brains to cut the 'visit' short.
Now, repeat that scenario several times a day, in different cities, year round and tell me that these animals aren't being exploited and mistreated. It made me sick.
I am not a member of PETA. I agree that the organization is full of kooks. They were correct in their assessment of this 'show', however. " calumet
" This is another sad excuse for an “educational show”, where in reality these animals are being exploited for one reason only – monetary gain. These cute baby tiger and lion cubs will grow up to be 300-500 lb big cats and are destined for a life in captivity or worse, can end up in canned hunts or killed for the black market. There are more tigers in captivity in the United States then there are in the wild. Until laws are passed restricting private ownership and exploitation of these great cats, this type of animal cruelty will continue. For more information about “Big Cat Exhibition” visit: http://www.bigcatrescue.org/bigcatexhibition.htm " tigress62
Why would you ask such a question? "Are you with them 24/7"? Well, what you do think? NO! That is why I said hopefully, they get fed and are well taken care of. I do not associate with the animals mentioned in this article nor do I know the trainers and/or owners.
Think about this, "protectanimals", they MUST be PROPERLY TRAINED, because why else would this company allow people to GO INSIDE THE CAGES WITH THE ANIMALS? It would be insane to let in-experienced people into a cage with a wild animals, babies or not.
Here's something else to think about. If the animals weren't trained, don't you think the company would of done something about that? Obviously they are, because why would a company like this allow in-experienced people into a cage with a wild animal? I don't post on this blog to argue! " josh
" Josh.....they are pretty harmless at this age........they are far from trained, they are helpless and are used for money (it's a million dollar company), when they get too big they are not used anymore, they only breed them for their shows and once they get a certain age thats it for them.....'cause they can not be on the shows anymore..they sure would not let a child go in a cage with an adult tiger...this person who made the call to the city did it out of concern and I have to agree with her...this company just came in for the money and they will go to the next town....they made alot of money from the downriver residents, they are pros! " " Also, Josh, Those workers would NEVER get in a cage with an adult tiger or lion....Never....the workers are only trained to work the crowd for the money and once again they have duped the public....those poor animals....their fate will not be good...I'm a retired teacher and have been a advocate for animals for many many years and have also known about this G.W. Exotic Animal group for a long time, they are very sly and never let anyone know what town they are going to next. "protectanimals
" How can any reporter do a story about baby lions and tigers at a mall and not investigate how it was that they were bred into such a miserable life and what will happen with them in a couple of months when they are too big to pet. Any one with access to the Internet could easily find out that these precious animals will spend the rest of their lives in tiny, filthy cages, be shot for their pelts, cut up for meat or worse. If people don't know, it is because they choose to be ignorant, but that doesn't ease the suffering. More at Dying To Be Held http://www.bigcatrescue dot org/000news/0articlesbybcr/2008DyingToBeHeld dot htm "
" You are so right BIGCATRESCUE...the news herald was very partial with this article....they could have done more, they wanted this to be just another cute article...shame on them.....most of the article is centered around the people who put on the show...what do you think they are going to say..they are making a lot of money..they sugar coated the whole event..make phone calls and complain...I wonder if they will post any of these comments as a follow up in the paper...and phone calls need to go to the city hall and southland mall for allowing this......Why didn't the news herald reporter talk to the crowd about this animal show? They took one phone call and then went out and let the event employees make it look so great...and why wasn't the permit pulled prior to the show...how come that wasn't asked? How come this animal show wasn't advertised anywhere prior to coming? How come that wasn't asked? You know why...they don't want anyone to know they are coming to a local mall. How come the paper didn't asked "where do the animals go when they are grown, is it right to pull these babies away from the mother, how 'bout the baby kangaroo that should be in the mothers pouch not a purse hanging from a rack....the paper could have done BETTER asking questions.....maybe next time they will send a smarter reporter that thinks outside the box and doesn't just interview the event employees or take cute pictures of these babies....The paper should have had the pictures of reality of these tigers/lions stuck in cages or cut up for meat etc. Dear News Herald...take a good look at your cute little pictures you put in the newspapers of the baby tigers and I hope you always remember that cute little face will be shipped off when too big, sold for meat/hide/herbal and have a life of abuse before they are killed....next time news-herald TELL the whole story! " protectanimals
" PETA, DOESN'T THAT STAND FOR "PEOPLE EATING TASTY ANIMALS,

" calumet

" josh

Did I understand this woman to say that birth control was NOT the answer to the overcrowding? This is absolutely the first step that all monies should be devoted to. Whether by a 15 minute neuter of all the males, or by separating males and females, it seems ludicrous to ask for money to build a new zoo when they aren't doing the very thing that would have prevented the problem in the first place. Everyone knows that cubs mean money (for a couple months), so why is ending the supply of cubs not their first priority?
Zoo tiger dies after giving birth to cub
Wednesday, August 12, 2009
The mother of the baby Bengal tiger born at Noah's Ark Zoo Farm in Wraxall has died.
Tira, who arrived at the zoo in June with another female called Kushkja, died on Sunday after suffering multiple organ failure.
Post mortem results show that she had a disease called Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) which is caused by a virus called Feline coronavirus.
The six-year-old gave birth to three cubs on July 29, but two were sadly still born. Tira then rejected the surviving cub, and now staff at the zoo are hand-rearing him.
It is not yet known if he has the disease, and staff are hoping he does not develop any symptoms as there is currently no available treatment.
The virus is fairly common in cats, but less than five per cent of cats infected with it will go on to develop symptoms.
Zoo owner Anthony Bush said: "Tira's body was severely affected by the virus, resulting in multiple organ failure – it is likely that the disease had been developing for many months. In pet cats FIP often goes undetected until the end stages of the disease as symptoms are not always very obvious.
"Suddenly the abdomen becomes noticeably swollen (caused by fluid accumulation) and the cat quickly becomes very poorly; sadly, this appears to be what happened to Tira too.
"Some of the signs of the disease are very non-specific, such as distension of the abdomen, lethargy and a lack of appetite. Of course, given Tira was pregnant when she arrived, her distended abdomen and sleepiness were to be expected.
"Understandably keepers at the zoo are devastated after spending the last few weeks working hard alongside vets to make her better, not realising that they were fighting a losing battle. When you work that closely with animals it's like losing a close friend and we are all feeling the loss."
You can watch Tira's cub on a live webcam - and you can also vote on what he should be called.
Votes on whether he should be called Tapan or Tumkur will close on Monday.

The world is full of idiots. We know that. It's when those same idiots start endangering the lives of animals with their moronic actions that we get very upset.
The article below is written by Dr. Luke Hunter, head of Panthera.org. It's worth reading.
Tormenting Lions for TV
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This week, Animal Planet kicked off the latest offering from likable Steve Irwin-wannabe Dave Salmoni. "Into The Pride" follows Salmoni as he attempts to prove that humans can live in harmony with wild lions. To do so, Dave scoots around the Namibian bush on a quad-bike looking for a close encounter with the big cats. You might think a 4-wheeler doesn't offer much protection but, provided they're not hunted or persecuted, lions quickly get used to vehicles. A vehicle acts just like a mobile hide which is why millions of people a year are able to enjoy extraordinary experiences watching wild lions from the safety of their safari jeeps and mini-vans in Africa's great game parks. It even works with ATVs which disrupt the human silhouette sufficiently that Salmoni is on fairly safe ground -- so long as he keeps his distance and stays on the bike. The problem is, that's not daring enough for Dangerous Dave. When he finds the lions, he dismounts and, armed only with his shepherd's cane, he walks up to them.
Understandably and predictably, the lions get pissed off. In one sequence from the series, Salmoni pulls this stunt with a lioness called Cleo, resting with the pride's cubs and a gemsbok kill. Now, if someone asked me, how would I go out of my way to really aggravate a lioness, I'd tell them "threaten her when she is protecting her cubs. Or a carcass. Or, if you were an utterly self-absorbed ignoramus, both." Cleo does what a million years of evolution have engineered her to do when faced with potential danger to her cubs -- she charges. Dave shrieks a bit, high-tails it back to the ATV and scolds Cleo for her "inappropriate behavior." Of course, it's actually wholly appropriate -- any wild lioness so gratuitously provoked is apt to do the same. Once he's back on the bike, Cleo relaxes a little and backs off. Predictably, that only encourages this bushveld buffoon to try his luck again, and, again, Cleo comes like a tawny missile. She is upset, frightened and angry -- all thanks to Salmoni who is determined to show us that, as he recently told People magazine, he was 'tougher than they were'.
What self-indulgent baloney. Salmoni repeatedly tells us his antics are necessary because these are aggressive problem lions that must be habituated for eco-tourism or they will be destroyed. That would be reasonable if he stayed with his vehicle, just as tourists, researchers, scientists, guides and park rangers do every day across Africa. None of these folks wander up to lions hoping to get cozy (well, occasionally they do but the ending usually isn't pretty). If Salmoni was honest and respectful about habituating lions for tourists, he'd get them used to vehicles -- it's safer for both human and lion, and it wouldn't provoke the same distressed fury from Cleo. Ironically, most of the first episode is taken up with encounter after encounter between Dave and his film crew watching lions from their Land Rovers. The tactic yields beautiful vision of lions being lions -- Salmoni's team cops a few baleful looks and one frustrated rev from Cleo when Dave drives too close, but nothing serious. But of course that doesn't make good enough television so Salmoni makes sure he says 'these lions hate vehicles' a lot even after we've just watched shots of the cats doing little more than keeping a reasonable distance. And let's not forget, Dave reassures us this is all in the name of "conservation" so it's fine to crank Cleo's stress off the charts.
And to what end? Even if Cleo eventually tires of charging this clown, all he's achieved is to put her life more at risk. Lions co-evolved with our kind in Africa and generally do their best to avoid us. When wild lions see a person coming, they know enough to either disappear or give fair warning. Walking in the African bush, I've been the recipient of their low warning rumble a few times, like the sound of a tractor-trailer changing down gears. Lions tell people when it's a good time to change direction because they want to avoid conflict. Episode 1 shows a textbook case from one of the males, Brutus, on Dave's inaugural walk-in (niftily re-interpreted by our hero as the first step in Brutus' 'training'. Sheesh). Salmoni repeatedly forces these conflicts onto Cleo and her family in his puerile quest to show us who's boss. If he succeeds, Cleo is actually a great deal more dangerous. Conditioned out of her natural, sensible instinct to keep people at a safe distance, her normal flight circle becomes perilously small. Someone -- perhaps a lion-loving tourist who has seen the show -- only need blunder into her and, faced with a perceived hazard at too-close-for-comfort range, she attacks. If it happens, the predictable outcome is that Cleo gets a bullet. Good work Dave.
The greatest shame of this made-for-TV nonsense is that it obscures the authentic and far more meaningful conservation efforts undertaken by thousands of passionate, anonymous professionals working in Africa today. They will never get the recognition that Salmoni craves and they certainly will never see anything like his pay check. But they are the reason that lions and the wild places they need will persist. Salmoni isn't.
Dr. Luke Hunter is the Executive Director at Panthera, the leading global nonprofit organization devoted to saving the world's wild cat species from the diminutive black-footed cat of southern Africa to the massive tiger of Asia. Hunter has conducted fieldwork on large cats in Africa since 1992. His current projects include assessing the effects of sport hunting and illegal persecution on leopards outside protected areas, developing a conservation strategy for lions across their African range, and the first intensive study of Persian leopards and the last surviving Asiatic cheetahs in Iran.
